Around the 1980s, new systems and approaches began to emerge from modern and postmodern dance, giving rise to what is now known as Contemporary Dance. Inspired by techniques such as Graham, Cunningham, Limón and Release, this new form of dance broke away from the traditions of ballet. Contemporary Dance does not follow a single technique or movement language. Instead, it allows space for each dancer’s individuality and values the expression of feelings, ideas and concepts. Its settings and choreography seek to express emotions, conflicts and issues in contemporary society. They reflect on life and the human condition, exploring and seeking to master the universal forms of movement while considering both their physical and mental dimensions. The focus is on understanding and practising the principles of human movement and its endless variations. Contemporary Dance continually reinforces the importance of choreographic experimentation, encouraging students to develop their own interpretations of movement and guiding them towards a final choreographic creation.
Modern and Contemporary Movement classes are intended to be a space for discovery through the experience of organic and/or technical movement. By developing a more conscious awareness of the body and discovering its movement possibilities and expressive abilities, dance emerges from the body’s relationship with the elements that shape it: Time, Space, Dynamics and Interrelationships. It also develops through the relationship between the body’s individual parts and the body as a whole, as well as through observing and interacting with other bodies.
In this sense, the class seeks to develop an understanding of the principles and foundations of movement, enabling students to improve their execution and interpretation while revealing each person’s expressiveness and creativity, explored individually, in pairs or as a group. Through composition exercises, students develop the relationship between body and imagination, with the aim of enhancing choreographic quality.
